This book charts the development of European colonial competition, and its impact on the global balance of power, from the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 to the French Revolution. The author divides the colonial struggle into two theatres: the Americas and India, each with their own unique challenges and influential players. The British, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Portuguese all feature prominently, and the author details the diplomatic maneuvers, trade benefits, and conquests which shaped their respective empires. It was, however, England's conflict with France and Spain that dominated the century. Facing both rivals simultaneously would have been daunting, but fortuitously, their goals and weaknesses prevented them from forming a coherent alliance. France was embroiled in European affairs and neglected her navy, while Spain was weakened by exhaustion. England, meanwhile, focused on commerce, building a formidable navy in defence of its growing economic power and international influence.
