Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of floating islands, exploring their presence in classical literature and mythology. The author meticulously examines accounts from various sources, including Seneca, Pliny the Elder, and the epic poet Nonnus, to unravel the intricate blend of fact and fiction surrounding these enigmatic landmasses. The study meticulously traces the evolution of beliefs about floating islands, from their initial association with the dwelling places of deities like Aeolus to their later connection with the entrance to the underworld. The author skillfully analyzes the Homeric Planktai, the clashing Kyaneai or Symplegades of the Argonauts' adventure, and the Ambrosiai Petrai of Tyre, revealing their shared roots in ancient beliefs about a portal to the Otherworld. Through a comparative analysis of different cultural narratives, the book illuminates the universal human fascination with floating islands as symbols of mystery and the unknown. The author's insightful exploration of these legendary landforms sheds light on their significance in ancient cosmology and their enduring legacy in literature and folklore. By understanding the cultural and mythological context of floating islands, we gain a deeper appreciation for their role in shaping human imagination and our understanding of the world around us.
