The Wesleyan Missionary Society attempted to maintain a hands-off approach with its Canadian branch until its behavior caused concern. The Wesleyan Methodist Conference attempted to maintain a hands-off approach to its Canadian branch; however, certain behaviors by the Canadian branch attracted negative attention. The Canadian Conference, such as the Christian Guardian newspaper, promoted political views that differed significantly from the views of the main branch. The separation ultimately occurred when the main Wesleyan Methodist Conference determined that the Canadian Conference was in violation of their understanding, and negotiations between the two parties broke down. The book ultimately shows the internal division over time caused by the Canadian branch's political promotion and differences in religious principles between the two groups.
