Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a systematic study of how bacteria's virulence, or ability to cause disease, relates to their immunizing power in the body. The author, a bacteriologist at the turn of the 20th century, conducted experiments with cholera to compare the effects of a virulent (dangerous) strain as opposed to an avirulent (less dangerous) strain. He looks at the relationship between virulence and the organism's power to induce immunity in animals. The author emphasized that the virulent strain consistently produced a much stronger immune response than the avirulent strain, and thus had a greater capacity to protect against future infection. This research provided valuable insights into the nature of immunity and the development of vaccines, highlighting the importance of understanding the virulence of microorganisms in the context of disease prevention.
