Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the two terms of Lord Bathurst as Colonial Secretary and Colonial administration in Canada prior to and between the formation of the select committee in 1828. The author defends Lord Bathurstâs Canadian polices from attacks made on them during a House of Commons debate in 1838. This examination includes an assessment of the legislative union of 1822 between Upper and Lower Canada which was never fully implemented due to opposition by the Lower Canadian assembly. The author provides a detailed explanation of the legislation and discusses specific objections that were raised. The author explains how negative consequences might have been avoided if the bill had passed, including the late disturbances in Canada. The author also discusses other measures that were brought forward during Bathurstâs time, such as the dismissal of certain militia officers by Lord Dalhousie and emigration of 2000 Irish citizens to Upper Canada in the years 1823 and 1825.
