Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a manual for the practice of seeding loblolly pine trees. Prior to the author's research, extensive planting and sporadic direct seeding were the most common methods of loblolly pine regeneration. The author's breakthrough discovery was that the addition of insecticides to chemical coatings for repelling birds and small mammals greatly improved seed protection. This discovery, developed in the 1950s, revolutionized germination and growth rates for loblolly pine. The book details the emergence of direct seeding as a viable method of reforestation, including proper site selection, time of year to sow, types of sites best suited to seeding, recommended sowing rates depending on broadcast or row seeding, specific instructions for calibrating the various seeding machines, observation of germination and early growth to assess animal predation or other threats, and protocols for seedling release from competing vegetation. The author goes on to expound on the techniques and benefits of direct seeding as an alternative to planting, which will be of great use to landowners and forestry managers.
