Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is the 15th annual report of the Board of State Charities in Massachusetts, covering operations for 1878 and a broader 15-year historical sweep, including the Board's founding and work since. Various investigations focused on economy, efficiency, and humanity in running state institutions. The authors examine changes made to those institutions during this timeframe, such as the abolition of the hospital at Rainsford Island and of the School Ships, and the conversion of one of the State Almshouses into a primary school and of another into a workhouse. They also discuss in depth the addition to the State Almshouse at Tewksbury of an asylum for the chronic insane, and the change of the old Worcester Hospital into the same type of facility. Finally, they underscore their efforts in removing and settling inmates to be supported by their friends or by the communities to which they belong.
