Proposition 1. Tyrants deserve death. Proposition Caesar was a tyrant. Conclusion. - Therefore, Caesar deserved death.

Every conclusion is thus seen to be deduced from two prepositions (thence called premises), and an argument or discourse, thus stated regularly, and at full length - as above - is called a syllogism.

Frequently, for the sake of brevity, one of the premises may be suppressed; but it is always understood. On the other hand, the terms may be amplified, modified, converted, &c.; but the process of argumentation (however elaborately expressed) ought to be capable of being reduced to this simple syllogistic formula.
