This book explores the effects of earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions on the natural and man-made environments, using seismic intensity data as a foundational element in making predictions on potential damage. The author surveys existing literature from across the globe on the topic and evaluates the variables which can cause the range of intensities to fluctuate given the same epicentral distance. They discover intensity is principally determined by the geologic environment and not the epicentral distance. The author includes microregionalization maps which show relative intensities for different geologic settings and concludes that those maps can be used with intensity-epicentral distance curves to predict the intensity at a given point, of known ground type, from an earthquake of given magnitude, epicentral distance and focal depth. These maps and curves can also be used to estimate potential seismic effects on man-made structures from underground nuclear explosions. This book has valuable insights for seismologists, geologists, and structural engineers to predict the effects of seismic disturbances and mitigate potential damage to human constructions.
