The author presents the application programs (both foreground and background) developed for this system using the Real Time Operating System (ROS) as part of the interface with the system operator via Teletype ASR 35. At the time of writing, the U sensor equipment was still under development, with expectations that the automated system would extend the life of the current sensors while simultaneously standardizing reporting methods and enabling more efficient use of equipment. The book goes into detail on the hardware used for the system and presents summaries of the system's ROS, scheduling, clock functions, waveform analysis, monitor subroutines, and the data input and output functions. It also discusses the implementation of DRFUD (Digital Recorder for U Data) data tapes in the system and the synchronization of U data analysis programs.
