Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the constant-head-orifice farm turnout (CHO), a structure used to measure and control irrigation water that has been in use on U.S. Bureau of Reclamation projects since the 1940s. The author explores the turnout's operating characteristics through a detailed study of four different geometries of the CHO, calibrated in both indoor and outdoor test channels, and operated under a variety of flow conditions. The effects of sediment, high canal velocities, varying downstream water levels, and plugging of the orifice gate by debris were studied. The author found that the CHO provided reasonably accurate measurement of discharge under most operating conditions, but when the gate opening was obstructed with debris or when the tail water level was increased, discharges were much less than indicated by the calibration curve. The author also includes design and calibration information for a steel constant-head orifice turnout, a lower-cost alternative to a reinforced concrete turnout that can be dismantled and moved from one place to another on a farm as irrigation development changes. This book is a valuable resource for water resource engineers, irrigation engineers, and anyone interested in the design and operation of irrigation water measurement and control structures.
