Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, on one of the most destructive plant diseases of the early 20th century, pear blight, describes the historical spread of the disease, as well as the symptoms and life cycle of the bacteria that cause it. Discovered in San Joaquin Valley in 1900, the disease rapidly decimated pear production. To address this, the author, a research assistant in pomology at the University of California, details extensive efforts by Agricultural Experiment Stations and the state Commissioner of Horticulture to educate growers on control methods. These methods included cutting off infected branches and the use of chemicals like zinc chloride, along with detailed instructions on how to perform these techniques. The author's insights into the disease and methods of combating it continue to inform and shape scientific strategy against plant blights today.
