Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book surveys the physical characteristics of Kona, a district on the western side of the island of Hawaii. The district is divided into two parts, North Kona and South Kona, with the area surveyed in this book comprising a strip of land extending 5 miles along the coast and 7 miles inland. The author maps the geology and soil formations to aid in dividing the land based on its soil types and their relation to coffee production. Historically, Kona has remained a district of small farms, with coffee as the chief crop. The small-farming methods are in part due to the physical barriers imposed by the lava flows from the two young volcanoes, Hualalai and Mauna Loa, which have created unique soil formations. Some land is used for cotton, macadamia nuts, or ranching, but a majority of the inhabitants are Japanese coffee planters who lease land to cultivate coffee. The book includes a soil and geological map which aided in dividing the area into eight sections or 'zones' based on climate to include a lower semiarid belt, a lower humid belt, a rain belt, an upper humid belt, and an upper semiarid belt. Each zone is analyzed for its soil, topography, and potential agricultural uses. These range from dry-land grazing to coffee cultivation.
