Excerpt from M. I. T. In World War II
Carved across the front of the National Academy of Sciences Building in Washington is a Greek inscription from Aristotle whose translation is The search for truth is in one way hard and another easy, for it is evident that no one can master it fully nor miss it wholly; but each adds a little to our knowledge of Nature, and from all the facts assembled there arises a certain grandeur. I feel that this quotation can well epitomize the history of m.i.t. In World War II. NO one who participated in these activities, nor any writer or reader of this history, can grasp it fully nor miss it wholly, but it is certainly true that from all the facts assembled there arises a certain grandeur which is the total contribution by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology toward the winning of what we hope and pray will have been the last great world war.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the crucial contributions of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during World War II. The author, drawing on personal experiences and extensive research, delves into the ways in which MIT transformed from a respected academic institution to a vital center of wartime research and development. The book chronicles the Institute's involvement in projects ranging from the development of radar and electronic espionage to the production of new weapons and materials. The author highlights the importance of trained personnel, specifically MIT alumni, who played a significant role in the war effort. He examines the Institute's policy of prioritizing national service above self-interest, making its facilities and staff available to the government without seeking financial gain. The book provides a unique insight into the role of technological institutions during a time of global conflict, demonstrating how academic expertise and resources can be mobilized to support a nation's war effort.
