Excerpt from The Coal Question: An Inquiry Concerning the Progress of the Nation, and the Probable Exhaustion of Our Coal Mines
At a future time, then, we shall have in?u ences acting against as which are now acting strongly with us. We may even then retain no inconsiderable share of the world''s trade, but it is impossible that we should go on expanding as we are now doing. Our motion must be reduced to rest, and it is to this change my attention is directed. How long we mav exist in a stationary condition I, for one, should never attempt to conjecture. The question here treated regards the length of time that we may go on rising, and the height of prosperity and wealth to which we may attain. Few will doubt, I think, after examining the subject, that we cannot long rise as we are now doing.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book grapples with a fundamental question that has long preoccupied thinkers and policymakers: the potential exhaustion of Britainââ â¢s coal reserves. The author delves into the historical debate surrounding this issue, citing early writers who foresaw the consequences of depleting this vital resource. He then explores the key factors influencing coal consumption, analyzing the role of free trade, technological advancements, and population growth. The book goes beyond mere geological analysis, examining the social and economic implications of a dwindling coal supply. The author cautions against complacency, arguing that the nationââ â¢s industrial and commercial supremacy are inextricably linked to the availability of this crucial energy source. He contends that failing to address this issue could lead to economic stagnation, social upheaval, and ultimately, a decline in Britainââ â¢s global standing. Through a blend of historical analysis, economic reasoning, and insightful observations, the book provides a compelling and thought-provoking assessment of a critical issue facing Britain in its time of burgeoning industrial growth.
