Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the nature of fossil vegetation in various strata from the earliest sedimentary deposits up to the period of the chalk deposits. A particular focus is given to the nature and origin of coal. Using microscope technology, the author offers a detailed analysis of fossil stems to determine the structure of ancient plants. The author argues that the preponderance of vascular cryptogamic plants was considerable, but that there also existed coniferous trees, or such as contained a complicated woody structure, in great abundance, and many of them of a height equal to the loftiest of those just mentioned. The book includes a discussion of the distinctive characters of the different tribes of plants in general, and of the Coniferae in particular. The author's examination and illustrations of the transverse and longitudinal sections of fossil trees shed new light on the structure of these plants. By comparing these with existing vegetable stems, the author provides evidence to suggest that the gymnospermous phanerogamic plants almost entirely composed the ora of this period.
