Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the public lands in the Tongue River Area of Montana and Wyoming, with the objective of recommending their use for the best interests of the public. It provides an analysis of the physical, economic, and social factors that apply to these public lands, which cover 181,000 acres. Among the main topics are the history of the region, its geology, climate, and soils; the native plants and wildlife; and the economic and social development of the area. The author provides a detailed range vegetation inventory, analyzing each plant by its frequency of occurrence and including a discussion of its forage value. The book also examines the accelerated water erosion damage in the area, classifying 53 percent of the public domain as none to slight, 42 percent as slight to moderate, and 5 percent as moderate to severe. The author concludes by making recommendations for the management and tenure of the public domain lands, with the aim of promoting their use in the best interests of the public, compatible with proper conservation practices.
