As part of a larger project, the author was tasked with organizing a corps of observers to participate in a study of vertical temperature, humidity, and wind direction using kites. Using readily available materials, the author designed and constructed the kites and related apparatus to be used in this project. The author also developed a method for accurately measuring the elevation of the kite. Beginning in May 1898, over 400 kite ascensions were performed, with a focus on observing weather conditions at elevations of 1,500 feet or more. The author carefully examined the data and discovered a consistent rate of temperature decrease with increasing altitude, as well as a steady decrease in the rate of temperature decrease with increasing altitude. The author also observed a number of inversions, or instances where the temperature increased with altitude, and found these inversions were more common at lower altitudes and with certain wind directions. The author's humidity data showed that the relative humidity was generally lower at higher altitudes, with cloud cover often leading to an increase in humidity. The author acknowledges that this study is only a preliminary report, but the data collected provides valuable insights into the atmospheric conditions of the lower levels of the air. This information can be used to improve weather forecasting and our understanding of atmospheric dynamics.
