Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book evaluates the feasibility of using aircraft to deliver fire retardants on wildland fires in the southeastern United States. The author, a Forest Service scientist, conducted a series of calibration tests in which various amounts of fire retardant were dropped from a tanker aircraft onto different types of forest vegetation. The results of these tests showed that the amount of retardant that reached the ground varied depending on the type of vegetation, the height of the drop, and the wind speed. The author also conducted a series of test fires in which he used both borate and wet water to suppress fires. The results of these tests showed that both borate and wet water were effective in suppressing fires, but that borate was more effective in preventing the spread of fires. The author concludes that aircraft can be an effective tool for suppressing fires in the southeastern United States, but that the type of retardant used and the method of application must be carefully considered.
