The fascinating content of this book documents an acceptance test of a turbine at the Beloit Water, Gas and Electric Company in Wisconsin, which ran from March 18th to April 10th, 1908. The author provides a detailed account of the six runs conducted during the testing period. The first run was a two-hour no-load run, followed by a quarter-load run of three hours, a half-load run of three hours, and a three-quarter-load run of two hours on different days in March. In April, a full-load run of seven and a half hours was conducted, which was followed by a two-hour overload run. The author's objective was not solely to gather data on steam consumption but to also perform a comprehensive plant test. However, given the existing conditions, the test was limited to the turbine. The turbine in question is a seven hundred and fifty brake horsepower, impulse turbine, built to run condensing at a speed of eighteen hundred revolutions per minute. The author includes insightful commentary about the inner workings of this turbine, as well as the difficulties experienced during the testing process, such as steam leakage and vacuum pump issues. Due to the absence of superheated steam, a poor vacuum, and excessive waste of steam, the turbine had a high steam consumption at all loads. The author concludes that the insights gained from this rigorous testing process are invaluable for refining turbine design and optimizing performance in future projects.
