Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a compilation of addresses, discussions, and resolutions from the inaugural conference of the Civic Improvement League of Canada, held in 1916 in Ottawa. The inaugural conference focused on improving civic conditions in Canada, with particular attention to town planning, housing, public health, immigration, and unemployment. The author identifies poor sanitation in rural areas outside city limits, lack of uniformity in municipal government leading to financial mismanagement, lack of regulation in land valuation for assessment purposes, and uncoordinated municipal statistics as some of the main causes of poor civic conditions. Ultimately, the book argues that public consciousness of present deficiencies must improve before meaningful change can occur, which is precisely the goal of the Civic Improvement League of Canada.
