In this Biography I have endeavoured to let Stopford Brooke reveal himself. Such description as I have attempted is chiefly intended to define the field of vision, and the most I can hope to have achieved is to have left his self-revelation unimpaired. I have built a frame round the picture, of which the lines and colours are his own. The thanks I owe to those who have helped me in this work are, in the main, family debts; but they are exceptionally great, and I cannot refrain from mentioning them. To Miss Cecilia Brooke, and to Miss Angel Brooke, the surviving sisters of Stopford, and to the Reverend Arthur Brooke, his surviving brother, I am indebted for access to a vast amount of correspondence, for permission to make use of the early diary of their mother a very sacred document and for much personal information, without which some of the earlier chapters could not have been written.
