This book describes how the first stage of a partial automation project was implemented in the laboratory of the NIST Mass Group, where mass calibration services are provided to customers. The computers' software was programmed in LabVIEW and engineers connected the different instruments with RS-232 serial cables through code operated matrix switches. The automated system measures the environment, with a barometer, a hygrometer and a thermometer, along with the weight measurement, which is conducted with a precision balance. The author examines the benefits of the automation, which include the elimination of paper and resulting dust in the measuring environment, as well as increased accuracy, reduced operator bias, and more comprehensive reporting capabilities. The improved setup uses fewer staff and provides a safer, cleaner and more precise measuring process. The comprehensive reporting capabilities, which include the possibility of spreadsheet integration, are an especially noteworthy outcome of the automation, as mass calibrations are affected by a variety of factors and therefore require highly detailed reports.
