Observed in 1900, the parasite was initially identified as resembling trypanosomes. However, Captain Donovan reported in 1903 that the parasite was distinct and named it Leishmania donovani, after the scientist who first identified it. The author examines specimens of the parasite and finds them to be similar to those observed by Donovan, concluding that they are indeed a new type of parasite. The author also discusses the clinical features of the cases in which the parasites were found, and the post-mortem appearances of fatal cases. The book is significant as it reports on the initial identification and study of a newly discovered parasite, which would later be recognized as the cause of visceral leishmaniasis or kala-azar, a disease that primarily affects the spleen and other internal organs, and is still prevalent in many parts of the world today.
