Originally named R.H. Macy and Co., this book details the origins of the store from its humble beginnings as a dry goods store, to its growth into a retail juggernaut. The author provides many historical anecdotes alongside a detailed timeline of events which shaped the store throughout its history. The narrative explores the significant impact Macy's had on the retail landscape, including its pioneering of new business practices and its influence on American consumerism. The book also discusses the store's role in popular culture, from its famous Thanksgiving Day Parade to its appearances in film and television. Ultimately, the author argues that Macy's is not just a department store, but a reflection of the ever-changing social and economic landscape of New York City.
