Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the relation between diet and nutrition in white rats through feeding experiments with isolated food substances. The book's chapters examine how various dietary conditions affect the health of rats, including varying macronutrient content, such as protein, fat, and carbohydrates, as well as the presence of roughage and inorganic salts. The author shows the importance of a monotonous diet, palatability of food, and physical texture and digestibility of nutrients on a rat's health and growth. The text demonstrates the need for specific inorganic salts in a rat's diet and shows that alterations in these salts can induce marked dietary changes. The author also explores the role of alimentary bacteria and nutrition, and examines the impact of realimentation after a period of dietary decline. Through investigation of the influence of nutrition on growth, the author determines that growth can be retarded by feeding rats a single protein and that underfeeding alone is not responsible for the retardation of growth. The book concludes that both the energy and qualitative aspects of diet play an important role in growth, and that the capacity to grow can be inhibited by malnutrition, highlighting the importance of nutrition on the growth and development of organisms.
