The author begins with an overview of the effective medium formulations of Lorentz-Lorenz, Clausius-Mossotti, Maxwell-Garnett, and Bruggeman, highlighting their key differences. They adapt the Clausius-Mossotti and Bruggeman formulations to account for disordered cluster suspensions, a relevant development for these composites, as carbon black may form electrically conductive clusters that depend on the total loading. These models hold application to conductive carbon particle and insulating polymer composites, which are currently being tested for use in human phantoms. The book concludes by comparing the adapted aggregate forms of the Clausius-Mossotti, Bruggeman, and Maxwell-Garnett theoretical effective permittivity predictions with room-temperature laboratory dielectric data obtained on carbon-silicone composites.
