Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book studies the history of the Young Women's Christian Association within the context of Oberlin College. It examines the integration of nonconformity into the Oberlin community and the shift from autocracy to democracy within college governance. The author argues that the decades of change between the 1890s and 1910s were a critical period for Oberlin, with the debates about the Y.W.C.A. serving as a proxy for larger, simmering institutional debates. The book also discusses the roles of women within Oberlin, particularly their role in social service, foreign missions, and other aspects of newly emerging community outreach. The author describes the founding of the Y.W.C.A. by Lucy Lamb Wilson and others, the controversy surrounding the transition from a Sunday prayer meeting to an organized body, and the subsequent expansion and evolution of the organization, from its early days as a student-led group to its eventual acquisition of paid staff and the development of its own building and resources. The author concludes by arguing that the history of the Y.W.C.A. at Oberlin is a microcosm of the broader changes that were occurring in women's education and the role of women in society during this period.
