Synopsis

This book discusses the Sixteenth Annual Convention of the United Farmers of Alberta, held in Edmonton from 15th to 18th January 1924. The convention covered a wide range of agricultural topics, with a focus on measures to be taken to assure the development of cooperative marketing in all products of the farm. A major theme of the convention was the discussion of a plan for a chartered bank owned and controlled by the Alberta Government. The convention also discussed and approved the report of the Marketing Committee and the report of the Newspaper Committee. The author presents a vision of what the U. F. A. could and would accomplish in progressing cooperatively, focusing on the future possibilities of establishing industry and citizenship on the foundation of cooperative activities in all aspects of farming and farm life. The book reveals the very strong determination, sanity and unity of the membership at the time, viewing the period as a crucial time for farmers in Alberta, with the author posing the question: "Will the Alberta farmers go on in that development, guided by sanity and wisdom, working and achieving until their efforts are rewarded by success? Or will they retire from the field, exhausted by their first effort, grumblingly but submissively to resume the burdens of servitude?"
