The author discusses the formulation of the unsteady, non-uniform open channel flow problem and the influence of reach length and time increments on the shape of the routed hydrograph. The book concludes with a comparison between storage flood routing and a higher order routing method, demonstrating that the best correspondence occurs when the time increment is approximately one-fourth to one-half of the time to the peak of the inflow graph. This method converges on the correct result as the time increment approaches zero, showing that the storage flood routing method provides a valid approach for solving open channel flow problems.
