My husband and I had toured Alaska during a summer and met friends who persuaded us to live in Alaska during a winter. We drove off and 76,000 miles later arrived in the Panama Canal region where we pondered that suggestion and thought it would be a good idea. We had always lived in the tropics, so we thought, ‘What about living in sub-zero temperatures. That will make a change.’ The novel is slightly autobiographical, and is set in Juneau because I needed small town atmosphere.
