Synopsis

Four seasons of haiku are captured in this brief and wonderful collection of haiku penned and published over a life-time by Don Holroyd. Billy Collins insists that poets are first and foremost keen observers of the world around them and the life inside them, and that the first requirement in poetry is paying attention. For decades, whether through a winter window or during a summer walk, when snowed in by a Pennsylvania blizzard or while strolling through a farmer’s market in China, Don Holroyd has paid attention. He takes photographs with stray pencils on the backs of envelopes and on receipts from his wallet, whenever and wherever inspiration strikes. And it is Don's readers, myself included, who are rewarded by his keen eye and by his gift of translating pictures into poetry.

À propos de l'auteur

A native of Rhode Island, Don Holroyd holds degrees from Brown University and Claremont Graduate School. From 1968 until his retirement in 1997 Don inspired students while an English professor at York College in York, Pennsylvania. He served as an adjunct professor at York until 2009. As a teacher of English as a second language Holroyd received Fulbright grants to teach in Catania, Italy; at Damascus University in Syria; and at Aichi University in Nogoya, Japan. He spent sabbatical time at Birzeit University on the West Bank in Palestine, and at Nanjing University in China as a “foreign expert” teaching writing and American literature to future Chinese high school teachers of English. While in Japan (1967—68) Don discovered Harold G. Henderson’s slim paperback Haiku in English. When he returned to the United States, Henderson’s introduction to the haiku form of poetry inspired Don to write haiku and submit his first attempts to literary magazines and journals. He began to read more of the classic Japanese haiku poets and joined the Haiku Society of America. Don Holroyd’s haiku has been published in Haiku Headlines, Dragonfly, Haiku West, Frog Pond, and Modern Haiku. Holroyd says, “I believe my experience writing haiku has made me a better reader and teacher of poetry. I have learned to respond as a poet to what I see and feel. At our best, I think writers of haiku try to fulfill this observation by Abraham Lincoln: ‘It is indispensable to have a habit of observation and reflection.’ For me, writing haiku has developed and honed that habit of observation and reflection; and I am grateful for the art form as it has enriched my life.” Don and Dorothy Holroyd continue to make their home in York, Pennsylvania where they enjoy the adjoining beautiful Amish countryside of Lancaster County. Together they enjoy reading, writing, music, and gardening almost as much as they enjoy staying in touch with and visiting with their extended family of siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
