This document establishes guidelines for identifying and managing oral disease risks in the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Health Care System. The BOP Clinical Practice Guidelines for Preventive Dentistry represent a collation of acceptable practices for the dental management and treatment of oral conditions, including dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. Early detection of disease and intervention can significantly improve the oral health and well-being of inmate patients. These guidelines provide a framework for the delivery of quality oral healthcare/preventive services, and to sustain continuous improvement of dental practice in the BOP. They are not intended to restrict individual clinical judgment.
