George MacDonald (1824-1905), a Scottish clergyman, was among the most influential fantasy writers of the 19th century. He was a personal friend of Lewis Carroll and Mark Twain and influenced 20th-century authors such as W.H. Auden, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Madeleine L'Engle.
