Maria Montessori is the epitome of the expression “a woman before her time.” This text, a translation of the original Italian edition, introduced her inspired approach to education to the United States in 1912. Considered radical by the nation’s education establishment, it would not become a significant movement in this country for a half-century. And that would be America’s loss. Though her method may not have become dominant, her insight into the ways children learn and—perhaps especially—into workable approaches to overcome resistance to learning could have proved invaluable to teachers and education planners. And it still can be. Many (if not most) of the systemic shortcomings she identified at the end of the nineteenth century are still prevalent today! Modern teachers at all levels will recognize those pitfalls. Teachers of younger children can especially benefit from Montessori’s insight, but in many cases secondary teachers can benefit as well.
