In 2012 the Museum of Lancashire was invited to take part in a programme of Heritage Lottery Funded activity under the banner of "Preston Remembers" which centred on the refurbishment of the Cenotaph in Preston city centre.A marble tablet mounted on the wall of St Mary's Church, now Lancashire Conservation Studios behind the museum, gave us the perfect opportunity to explore local stories from the community on our doorstep. The tablet contained 80 names of soldiers killed during the First World War, but nothing more, no ranks, regiments or indication of date of death. The lives of these men were a complete mystery.A team of 17 volunteers from the local area were recruited in 2014, many of whom continued to be actively involved throughout the project. A training programme was provided to develop the volunteers' skills in historical research and exhibition development. From the outset the volunteers were incredibly dedicated, enthusiastic and quickly developed a bond with the soldiers that they were researching. We all feel incredibly proud to have been part of this project and the tireless work of the volunteers has been truly inspiring. Every soldier was identified, something that we thought may not be possible, and their stories represent the full course of the First World War from 1914 to the Armistice, including all major battles fought. The research illustrates just how the men from this small Preston community played their part on the world stage and thanks to the research; we can fully appreciate the lives and deaths of our fallen heroes.
