In this book, Ramesh Ramdoyal, the author of the locally best-selling trilogy - Tales From Mauritius, More Tales From Mauritius and Further Tales From Mauritius - once again delights us with nine original stories, each more captivating than the other. This time the author does not restrict himself to the island of Mauritius. He goes further afield. In Castaway, the action takes place in the remote island-archipelago of Saint Brandon with its unique flora and fauna. This is the place where a fugitive is hiding not only from justice, but also from the demons that have followed him in his solitary confinement. In Fishy Stories, he makes us discover the underwater wonderland around the island, and shares with us a dramatic spear-fishing experience, and a quaint story about a fisherman, his wife and an octopus! 'Monarch of the Forest' is a beautiful story of a hunter who loves hunting and hates killing. Just as the author's 'fishy' stories usher you into the exciting world of a Mauritian fisherman, 'Monarch of the Forest' ushers you into the heart of the Mauritian forest land and makes you share the thrills and heartaches of a passionate hunter. In Letter to My Beloved, we follow a youth to Oxford in a world that is both fascinating and alienating where he discovers with a shock that love can have many different forms. The Struggle Is Never Over is the authentic story of one of the greatest freedom fighters of Mauritius against which the evolution of the island can be understood. The Minister And The Artist is the hilarious story of a well-meaning politician who has to reckon with the inefficiency of his own staff to salvage his political career. Jonah is the real story of a sensitive teenager who comes into his own after he is sent down from a 5-star college. In Dancing in the Rain, we share the tribulations of an ageing couple in a fast paced environment, outside their comfort zone; whilst A New Beginning follows a group of survivors to a mysterious planet that holds out the promise of a better world. The stories are interesting in their own right, but when taken together, they reveal the soul of an island which is unique and fascinating. Ramesh Ramdoyal confirms once again his standing as one of the best story-tellers of Mauritius.

Ramesh Ramdoyal Mauritian educationist, poet, novelist and short story writer, the writings of Ramdoyal comprise a range of texts in English and Mauritian Creole, all of which bring out his main concern: Mauritius and its distinctive multi cultural society. Born on March 28, 1939, Ramdoyal spent the earlier part of his childhood in his native village. When his family moved to the city of Port-Louis, Ramdoyal found himself evolving amidst a vibrant pluricultural community in the foothills of Signal Mountain. Exposure to these two different worlds at a very young age became one of the sources of inspiration for his writings as the island, though small, is striking in its juxtaposition of cultures and lifestyles. At the end of his secondary schooling at the Royal College of Port-Louis, he became a laureate of England’s Scholarship in 1958. This enabled him to go overseas to study English Language and English Literature in Dublin, and subsequently in Oxford. He went on later to the University of London, where he received his Master of Philosophy in Education. In the meantime, Ramdoyal developed a keen interest in the socio-economic development of his homeland. On his return to the island in 1971, he served as Private Secretary to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius. Given his interest in education, he became one of the pioneers of the Mauritius Institute of Education, where he served as Director from 1980 to 1997. By then, Ramdoyal became widely known not only as the author of The Development of Education in Mauritius (1977), but also for his collection of stories in Tales from Mauritius (1979), More Tales from Mauritius (1981), Further Tales from Mauritius (2012). His interest in his mother tongue emerged in two of his works: a set of poems (1985) and The Prisoner of Conscience (1990), an English translation of an award-winning play. He produced another work, Festivals of Mauritius, in 1990. This was designed as an introduction to the island’s multi-religious heritage, and a French translation was published the following year. In 2014, Ramdoyal published a collection of poems in English entitled “The Islander's Song and Other Poems”. His biographical fiction An Islander's Journey and two more books in Mauritian Creole are awaiting publication.
