In this brief book, Albert Hughes identifies critical errors of philosophical judgment carried down from the Age of Enlightenment that are responsible for the widespread lapse of Faith and Christian practice in the Western world, i.e., the decline of Christendom. Not that the general population are students of philosophy, but that the key suppositions of materialism, positivism, rationalism and relativism have been enculturated over time in the habitual thoughts and actions of the many. As will be shown, these “…isms” at best, are misleading paradigmatic half-truths. They have led to an apocalypse of religious indifference in the Western world. There are in particular four specific paradigmatic half-truths; philosophies subconsciously accepted by many, that are the root cause from which springs the cultural conflict waged today in the courts, in politics, in media and especially within families. As paradigms, these philosophic “Digms” – materialism, positivism, rationalism and relativism – are the root cause of conflicting decisions at the heart of National discord and disunity; they tear us apart. For the sake of civil discourse and the recovery of National unity, perhaps in our own time we all can join in asking one another: “Buddy, can you spare a ‘Digm?”

Lt Colonel Albert E. Hughes (USAF retired), holds an MS in Systems Management (with distinction) from the Air Force Institute of Technology, an MM in Pastoral Ministry from Seattle University (Jesuit), is certificated in Spiritual Direction by the Monastery of the Risen Christ at San Luis Obispo, CA; and is an accomplished retreat master and Catholic evangelist. A convert at mid-life from agnostic rationalism, for twenty five years he taught Scripture and conducted periodic retreats in parishes at Seattle WA, Santa Maria, CA and Corpus Christi, TX. He stood down from teaching to document the mystical causes of his most abrupt, miraculous conversion - and that which followed. His conversion, while in command at Antigua Air Station, West Indies, is related in Paradise Commander in specific detail. I In short, he went from agnosticism to Faith, to Baptism to a Pentecostal (Charismatic) encounter of the Holy Spirit in ten weeks. For months and periodically thereafter, he and his wife were witness to miracles, leading the two to commit in unconditional obedience to God. His wife Jeannie’s life testimony is published as Saint Jeannie’s Shiny Black Shoes. Except for his writing, Col. Hughes is fully retired now, living in the Body of Christ, Corpus Christi.
