In the years after WW2 rural life in the North of Scotland appears peaceful. Yet the damage caused by war is everywhere, not least in the people who are left to build lives in an exhausted country, weary for the better things in life. There are also those who would rather not wait, but help themselves to what they can grab now. Into this apparent quiet, crashes the brutal and seemingly motiveless killing of a young farm boy. The only reasonable suspect is his friend, a strange little war orphan who wanders the countryside at night haunted by hideous memories of the London blitz. No one, not even he himself knows who he really is, nor if his experiences have driven him to murder. Inspector Macrae and his naive war- wounded sergeant struggle to make sense of a meaningless murder, attempting to prove who the killer is and the identity of this odd child. In their attempt, they stir up violence and still more killing as the murderer attempts to hide his or her secret. Without the benefits of today’s forensic science, everything depends on the sharp skills of the police and their allies in the attempt to prevent innocent people being hunted down and falling prey to compassionless killers as the action races across the countryside of North East Scotland.
