Synopsis

In this second part of the Dark Water series, the year is 1952. Life is improving after the austerity of the post war period; teenagers have opportunities to improve their lives and take advantage of high employment or go on to higher Education. But the effects of the war are insidious and young people find life can be difficult, torn by emotions left damaged by loss and lack of direction. When a pretty girl goes suddenly missing, the concerns of her friend, Alex Douglas, now sixteen, are not taken seriously until information begins to appear which suggests strange, violent assignations by night. Inspector Macrae finds himself caught in a tangle of deceit, false information and confused relationships. Young people, poised to go off to into a new life in the city are innocently drawn into fear and violence, thrust to the terrifying edge of the precipice of death itself. In another drama, like a strange echoing shadow play in the same landscape in 1722, a story unfolds of a vile murderer who creeps in the darkness preying on innocent girls. A youth, adopted by the laird, finds himself confronted by a mystery which he feels compelled to solve, despite his lack of experience, depending on his wits and the good will of the people of his community. As he comes to the end of his education, and grows towards adulthood, discovering the joys and anguish of first love, he and his slow – witted older brother try to follow the mind of the murderer who eludes everyone. Life in the happy rural community is slowly poisoned as deaths occur and the young detective finds he has to give all he has to catch the villain and bring peace back to the village. In the dreadful climax, the two stories merge, the protagonists bound together by a slowly unfolding history of two families.
