Synopsis

This book is Dr. Leslie John Adkins' attempts to show that scientific thinking and Christian faith are compatible and that, as he wrote in a letter to his daughter, “the idea that He came is just as viable an idea as ever . . . [and] if you are completely open-minded to all the facts – that He came is still the best and most reasonable interpretation of all the facts.” For any struggling to reconcile faith and science, free will and instinct, this book should prove helpful and enlightening.

À propos de l'auteur

Leslie John Adkins was born, the third of five sons, in the little village of Sulgrave, England, in 1899. He served in and witnessed the horrors of the trenches during the waning months of the First World War, and it was there that he chose to become a Christian, beginning down a road which led him to seminary in America, to missionary service in the Turkey and Syria, and eventually to the ministry as pastor at several parishes in Massachusetts. Never entirely happy in the ministry, he decided in his early fifties to pursue a career in psychology, eventually getting his PhD from Columbia. He spent the remaining years of his life, until he died in 1991, helping individuals and couples in New York City live more satisfying lives. Dr. Adkins was a life-long scholar who was fluent in six languages and read widely. As a self-described “scientifically-minded religious person” who valued both scientific thinking and religious faith, he was troubled by the notion held by many intellectuals, then as now, that the great advances in science over the previous century, particularly in the field of psychology, had rendered religion intellectually insupportable. For over forty years he struggled to construct a counterargument to that idea. That counterargument is this book, and in it is Dr. Adkins' proof that religion and scientific thinking are compatible. Unfortunately his book remained unpublished at his death in 1991 at age 92, and it is only now being published, twenty-five years later.
