Sam Venable (b. 1947) has written for Tennessee newspapers since the late 1960s. His principal medium is humor, although he is not above taking a serious stand when the mood strikes him. In 2014, he “officially” retired after more than 44 years with the Knoxville News Sentinel, yet he continues to produce regular columns for both the Local and Sports sections of the newspaper. He is the winner of more than three dozen state, regional and national writing awards, including the Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. His 2014 series, “Fragments of Hate,” was a Pulitzer Prize nominee. After originally studying forestry and wildlife management at the University of Tennessee, he abruptly changed course and earned a B.S. in journalism — “the perfect college degree for a professional smart-ass,” he insists. Venable is a member of the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Journalism Hall of Fame. He is the author of 13 books, including witty collections like “A Handful of Thumbs and Two Left Feet,” “One Size Fits All and Other Holiday Myths,” “Someday I May Find Honest Work,” “How To Tawlk and Rite Good,” and “WARNING! This Product Contains Nuttiness,” as well as the contemplative “Mountain Hands: A Portrait of Southern Appalachia.”
