Synopsis

Shiver me timbers! When treasure-seeking pirates take over his school, third-grader Jimmy Rodden does all he can to rescue his teachers and save his friends from walking the plank! Jimmy can’t believe his eyes when he arrives at Freedom Elementary one ordinary Monday morning to discover pirates have taken over his school! His third grade teacher is missing, and in her place is an honest-to-goodness pirate named Captain Jack Bluebeard! While his crew of pirates dig up the school grounds in search of buried treasure he insists is there, Captain Jack does a believable job as the substitute teacher with pirate-themed lessons in math, art, history, and more. As the day goes on, the pirates grow less friendly and more impatient as time begins running out to uncover the treasure. Jimmy and his classmates are afraid of what will happen if the pirates don’t get what they want. Could there really be a treasure at his school? Where have all the teachers gone? Will Jimmy’s plan to take back the school make him a hero, or cause his cousin, Lucy, to walk the plank? Sometimes fun, sometimes frightening, the pirates are a mystery Jimmy and his friends do their best to figure out.

Melissa Busler is an author, teacher, and tutor, whose passion for all things teaching and learning inspired the setting for her first young children's book. A graduate of Grove City College and native of Pittsburgh, Melissa currently resides in western Pennsylvania with her husband and three children. When not busy teaching middle school, writing, and raising her family (including her cat-that-acts-like-a-dog), she can be found cheering on the Pittsburgh sports teams and enjoying the outdoors.
