In 1880, New Mexico territory, a lonely man on a failing ranch would rather be left alone with his bitter memories of a life that should have turned out better than it has. When a woman and her young son show up because they have also met with tragedy, friendship between them is an uphill battle since the Civil War found them on opposite sides of the conflict. One after another, as more strangers find their way to the ranch, each one discovers that life rarely deals out what we think it should - but can surprise us wonderfully with what it does.
