A catchy tune by the Beach Boys in the mid-sixties, the lyrics of "Be True to Your School" hit many highlights of high school in that era. Boyfriends, girlfriends, sports, varsity athlete sweaters, school songs, cheerleaders, cars, and football games were all part of high school life. 1963 was a tumultuous year for us. The Cuban Missile crisis shook the country, the space program was launched to keep up with advances the Russians were making, and the Cold War was intense. Kennedy sent military advisors to Southeast Asia and the war in Vietnam was getting underway.

After graduating from Mt. Diablo High School in 1967, Don Filer spent three years in the United States Army as a Meteorological Observer. Mr. Filer, stationed at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona performed surface observations at Libby Army Airfield. He went to San Francisco State University and graduated in 1976 with a BA in Business Administration. He started working, as a Technical Writer for Multisonics, a leader in the traffic control industry and the first to use a microprocessor in a commercial application. In 1979, he got into the personal computer business when he joined Exidy, Inc., who made a personal computer called the Sorcerer. Don went to California Computer Systems producers of Apple and S-100 add-on products and joined Byte Industries in 1981 as Sales Manager. After that he moved to selling Qume daisy-wheel printers and then to Digital Marketing Corporation, one of the first distributors of business software for personal computers. He played a role in publishing a grammar checking add-on application, which today is a standard feature of most word processors. Don moved to Lexisoft, Inc., as Sales Manager for Spellbinder word processing software. A year later, he became regional Sales Manager for CompuPro. In 1987, he was Director of Marketing for Computer Aided Management, authors of ViewPoint project management software. After 6 years consulting in his own business, Don joined Hewlett-Packard as a systems support specialist. In 2000, when the company changed its name to Agilent Technologies he moved into an Information Technology role. Don has been an independent consultant since 2003.
