The years of World War I and those of World War II, the in between years and years after World War II were years I do not wish upon anyone. Although there were many happy times, adventurous years, the wars, particularly World War II brought upon me and my family distress, pain, threats, and near death. One of the more crucial weeks of my life and that of my two children were such that I did not dare to write about. My son, as he wrote about his story during World War II had asked me a few times to narrate the three weeks of hell. It was best that I did not tell him anything about it. Of course, there were joyous moments, more importantly the immediate good times when the American can to saves us from potential harm. I wrote this biography for the benefit of my family and hope that others may find in my words the comfort of getter years and the hope of a much better future.

The writer of the book, my mother, came from a family that had always the benefit of financial well being. Her maternal grandfather was quite well off, a well known architect and builder. Her father had a prominent position with a major brewing company in Munich. She enjoyed life and even an adventure to the United States. I translated my Mother's autobiography and edited it by adding information and stories that I had remembered but she did not mention. Also, I took quite some information from my grandmother's diary, a most extensively written diary for 1943 through nearly 1954. Mother had agreed to the additions I placed in her own book.
