Synopsis

What is the backstory of the War on Drugs? Trending High: The Call for Drug Policy Reform examines the idea for US politicians to pursue practical approaches in public health policy by legalizing cannabis in the United States to minimize the detrimental outcome of imprisonment for expected mothers and the minority community. The criminalization of cannabis targets underprivileged minority communities in the United States as the primary drug offenders, especially for women of color and mothers facing mandatory drug screenings. Historical investigation from The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 and the Rockefeller Laws provides polarized distinctions of the root of injustices for African American and Hispanic communities due to the War on Drugs. To illustrate the evidence of amending American Drug laws pertaining to cannabis, I examine the positive impact of decriminalization of all drugs in Portugal in 2001 and the legalization of cannabis in Uruguay in 2013. I will also present the case study of Mexico, where despite the decriminalization of smaller amounts of all drugs, is one of the precursors of the multitude of violence crippling communities in the middle of the illicit drug trade. Take a step with me, as I analyzed journal publications about the War on Drugs, racial disparities, statistics on prisons from the Bureau of Justice, and scientific research from doctors, who either oppose or approve the legalization of cannabis. I also gathered information interviewing policy makers, researchers from think tanks, health professionals, and former cops to provide me insight on imperative information regarding drug policy reform. My final conclusion suggests the larger implications of favoring addiction treatment as a public health issue by legalizing all drugs instead of strict criminal prosecution.
