Veteran preacher and author Fr. Jim Schmitmeyer invites you to experience the beauty of rural ministry in his newest book, Wildfire: Homilies from the High Plains. From hospitals to rodeos, truck stops to track meets, this collection of twenty-five homilies focuses on life in the rural Southwest as interpreted through the lens of scripture. The lyrical quality of the prose elevates everyday events as Fr. Schmitmeyer ruminates on everything from science and God to pursuing intimacy in the selfie generation.
There’s something for everyone among the sermons. For instance, “Hand to the Plow” reminds you to turn your struggles over to the lordship of Christ. In a different vein, “She Knew” is a stunningly unique perspective on Mary’s musings during her time as a mother. You will find yourself leaning in to the reality of fear as Mary watches the Son of God grow from helpless infant to a man whose words are too inflammatory to ignore.
Those who enjoyed Barbara Brown Taylor’s autobiographical Preaching Life will be inspired by the vivid imagery and incisive relevance of Fr. Schmitmeyer’s Wildfire.
