Alfred and Ruth Nelmes were married in Cam, Gloucestershire on Boxing Day 1856. One month later they sailed to Australia with Alfred's brother James and half-brother john Woodward. The book takes the family story from centuries ago on the border of England and Wales to their pioneering years in the Moruya district of New South Wales. Alfred and Ruth raised four daughters: Elizabeth, Caroline, Ada and Annie who became known as "gentlewomen" in Moruya. After Alfred's untimely death, Ruth became a midwife of note, later known as "Granny Nelmes, Wonder Woman of the South Coast". This is the story of Alfred and Ruth Nelmes, their daughters and their grandchildren.
