The scientific way of thinking dominates modern life. Yet our minds have evolved from primate ancestors. What changed our mental makeup so drastically that humans now dominate the biosphere while primates languish in zoos or are imperiled by the impact humans have on the environment? The answer lies, the author argues, in a mental 'trick' - recall allows us to organized the world to suit us, rather than have to wait for the slow process of evolution described by Darwin. This new insight reveals underlying consequences, reversing the long-held ideas of humans as a 'superior' species. Are we not, instead, an 'aberrant' species? The author argues that, if so, we are likely to endanger not just primates, but all ten million other species on Earth.

Christopher Malden has written previously (Dangerous Mind - On the Origin of Pseudo Species) on the subject of human evolution and how we are easily misled by the notion that humans occupy a place in a natural evolutionary continuum. In fact, he argues, it is more likely a single event (perhaps originating from radiation from outer space) initiated a kutation within brain structure, conferring a startling but dangerous advantage that enabled humans to outstrip all other species with a unique evolutionary advantage. As a technician at Oxford University Nuclear Physics Laboratory and at the Rutherford High Energy Laboratory, a combined literary and technical background provide the author with the ability to deconstruct the often arrogant pronouncements of modern scientists, pointing out they have now assumed the authority and position of religious elders while 'science' assumes the mantle of a new religion. While living for many years in Spain and France the author was associated with The University of Toulouse as a visiting scholar, contributed scholarly articles to leading journals and written extensively on the role of women in the early development of tools shortly to be collected in a forthcoming book 'Femina Sapiens',
